Some Ufologists and believers in aliens speculate that alien species, in addition to seeding our DNA in the first place, also tweaked primate evolution later on towards the emergence of Homo sapiens.
If this is true, there should be genetic and archeological evidence. Emily Singer, in Quanta Magazine, wrote an article entitled A Missing Genetic Link in Human Evolution. According to Evan Eichler, a geneticist at Seattle’s University of Washington, anywhere from 12 million to 8 million years ago, the common ancestor of the great apes demonstrated remarkable genetic change which occurred in no other family. Some tiny DNA segments, after replication, grabbed some traveling companions, and dispersed themselves in a most unusual pattern across the chromosomes. Only the great apes, the chimps, the bonobos, the gorillas, and let's not forget the ancestors of humans, benefited from these "duplicons" --DNA sequencing that appear time and time again on a specific chromosome--which Eichler claims is a efficient mechanism for the creation of new genes.
The new genes assumed important roles in the brain, including aiding and abetting the growth of new cells, and contributing to overall brain development and size. Once such gene is SRGAP2.
“This mechanism appears to be seminal in our evolution,” said Philip Hastings, a geneticist at Houston’s Baylor College of Medicine. He emphasizes the descriptive term "seminal" to the duplicon phenomena. This amazing and unique mechanism results in marked structural change of chromosomes. It is likely the ultimate source of our intelligence since there is no other marked change that can compare.
Change, of course, did not occur overnight, but in evolutionary measures, proved itself quite fast. Homo habilis evolved from Australopithecus just two to three million years ago, pushing our hominid brains on a path to doubling in size.
Duplicon phenomena, because of its complexity, defies testing by standard genetic methods, so new methods of study will have to be perfected.
ALIEN INTERVENTION?
If aliens somehow tweaked early hominids to become smarter, the duplicon strategy of dispersing DNA across the chromosome would have to be one candidate. This hypothesis is testable. Such change may have tell-tale signs just as the rest of our DNA gives us signatures and codes to tell us it was, indeed, of alien origins.
Right now, we can only speculate. Was it a coincidence, in other words, a result of random chance, that hominids experienced a mutation that created a unique DNA dispersion system in chromosomes to double their brain size and accelerate their intellectual, emotional, and linguistic development? Was it a random chance that an ingenious and powerful system arose that no other family on Earth possessed, or would possess, to permit rapid adaptation? Was it the work of little green or grey “eternal” geneticists in a lab on a floating spaceship, bent on seeding beings capable of joining their advanced civilization one day?
Maybe they will do a show and tell one day.
